Can cows or cattle have friendships?

I ume that there is some sort of hierarchy among herd animals, but does an individual animal show preference for the company of a specific other individual? If calves are allowed to grow to adulthood & stay with the herd, do they still feel some sort of bond towards their mothers? I am referring to cattle, dairy cows, oxen, whatever terminology you wish to use.
