Is it normal to be casual partners with my ex-boyfriend?

I have been seeing this guy that i used to work with for few months. Our relationship, to begin with, was mostly instead of doing more romantic things and activities together like a couple. He finally told me that he doesn't picture me as his future wife and cant continue the relationship as couples but we can continue having casual until we find our kind of people. I was astounded by his honesty and continued the but now I don't want to do this anymore. Is causal normal?
