Is high octane gas really much better?

I am driving a 2004 Mitsubishi Diamante. I plan to keep the car a very long time - as long as possible. But I also want to save money. I'll consult the dealer manual, but is there any general advice on gasoline, or any other measures to make the car last longer? Thanks!
